Welcome to Positive Muslims

We are a faith base organisation in the field of HIV & AIDS, established in the year 2000.

We offer our services from an Islamic perspective to all of humanity.

We encourage compassion, mercy and a non-judgementalism towards all human kind.

Positive Muslims acknowledges that HIV & AIDS is not a condemned disease BUT a manageable disease, where the people who are infected and affected can take a POSITIVE JOURNEY in LIFE.

We hope that our message will be conveyed and  understood through our work in the communities and the information available on this Website.

Mission Statement

We are committed to developing a theology of compassion; a way of reading the Qur’an and understanding the Sunnah (the path of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) that focuses on Allah who cares deeply about all creation.  This is Allah who, according to Hadith (prophetic tradition), said at the time of creation, “Indeed, my mercy overcomes my anger”. Such compassion, we believe, must be accompanied by a critique of, and challenge to, a society that forces people to the margins.

Assalaamu Alaykum : May the peace and blessings of the Almighty be with you

Muslims in South Africa are integrated fully into the South African nation.  It is no big surprise then that Muslims are also affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.  Dealing with this life changing illness that threatens the very fabric of human life and society effectively is critical not only for Muslims, but all South Africans alike.

We at Positive Muslims strive to equip the individual, communities as well as institutions with the necessary information and skills to live with this illness positively.  It is in this vein then that we offer Education and Awareness Programmes, Support and Development Programmes, do research as well as participate in Advocacy and Lobbying activities.

We operate from of a Compassionate Islam that upholds principles of Justice, Accountability and that is
Non-judgmental.

We invite YOU to visit us on site and bear witness.

 FATIMA NOORDIEN - DIRECTOR

Assalaamu Alaykum (Peace be upon you)

I was walking at the beach a few days ago and it seemed as if everything was picture perfect.

It was an hour to sunset, there was hardly a breeze, the day was winding down, the birds were feeding off the fish in the shallow waves, and I was healthy and able to enjoy all this created perfection.

Then I realized that I would not have appreciated this perfection if it wasn't for the previous cloud, rain, wind, darkness of night, etc that we experienced.

So it is with life. Life throws us many curve balls.  How we decide to play these balls enable us to stay afloat in this game of life or to have a sinking feeling of drowning and   going under.

Lets all play life with vigour, enthusiasm, and energy and with the right decisions so that we can stay playing and take the losses with the wins.

Assalaamu Alaykum (Peace be upon you)

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which has the potential to turn a life around.

A kind word is a positive attitude, an expression, a look of recognition, a touch - it's anything that lifts and kindles the spirit of another Human Being from misery to Happiness.

How many times has our lack of trust within us made us judge others unfairly with our conceited ideas-that are often far away from reality.

Remember this: There is no CREDIT LIMIT set for the execution of good deeds!

CHANBI BRAY - SUPPORT & DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Assalaamu Alaykum (peace be upon you)

My hope for the community is to realize the importance of LOVE...whether it is for your parents, children, relatives or friends or the general community out there. When you reach out to someone and accept that person unconditionally, with compassion and without judgment, inner and outer beauty will be revealed. When we become judgmental and start labeling people and events in our life as bad, that's what they will become. When we don't like something about people or relationships then perhaps we need to self reflect (look inside to see why that inner critic has appeared).

We all see, need and value different things and next time when we want to judge, lets try and see something beautiful about the person, or something that we can learn from them. Let's remove our masks that we walk with and reach out to others that are more or even less fortunate then ourselves. Let's move away from the separation paradigm where we see things as different in terms of gender (male and female), race (black and white), illnesses (where we see people living with HIV different from those not living with HIV or living with other illnesses like cancer/ heart disease). Let's heal our broken nation by healing ourselves......Lets become a nation that is united.

GALEEMA ZAINDEEN - EDUCATION & AWARENESS OFFICER

I encourage parents to talk to their children, really communicate with them about absolutely everything!

Get to know them, how they think, what they think about and then as parents use all opportunities to educate them.  Compliment the learning from school with the family morals and values by being their heroes, their role models.

My dream is for parents to realise how precious their kids are and how vital it is to raise well-balanced children that will be strong enough to confidently face the challenges of life each day-

XOLISILE LAWRENCE MCOTELI - GENERAL ASSISTANT

To all the youth out there, be aware that you are the leaders of tomorrow.

Always respect your Parents and remember that your education is the key to your success.

In order to accomplish successes in your life time, respect yourselves enough to stay away from the self destructive behaviors.

Take a stand against all type of abuse, drug abuse, gambling, promiscuity and crime.  Let us be a nation to be proud of.

Support, Counselling and Development

We support PWAs (people living with Aids) in group therapy, individual counselling, empowerment projects, helping to access affordable treatment-generally offering solidarity in personally meaningful ways. We are also developing a ‘buddy' system, (a one-on-one friend who will be around on an ongoing basis) and offering spiritual support.

Other Counselling Services Provided:

Individual Counselling: is provided for individuals who prefer support on an individual basis rather than in a group.

Family Counselling: is provided upon request from the family of the infected person. Often the family has difficulty dealing with the disclosure of a family member's HIV+ status. The family needs support, counselling and psycho-education regarding HIV/AID's.

Couple Counselling: counselling and support is provided for the couples whereby both partners are HIV+, as well as when only one partner is infected.

Bereavement Counselling: when an infected family member dies, the rest of the family often experience feelings ranging from sadness to anger, guilt, self-blame, shame and depression among other feelings associated with death and dying. Bereavement counselling is provided for the family.

Other Forms of Support: Home-based care is provided to people who have reached the last stages of their illness. Volunteer members of Positive Muslims also assist with the ghusal and janazah of the deceased.  Positive Muslims network with other organisations, like the Zakah Fund to provide food parcels for MPWA’s who are too ill to work or are unemployed and have difficulty in finding work.

Self-Empowerment Projects: MPWA’s are taught skills which helps them to start projects such as bead making and glass making. These projects help them to earn some money and become self-sufficient.

Research

We host a quarterly forum of all Muslim Researchers and others working in the area. We are also engaged in ongoing research on HIV/AIDS prevalence in the Muslim community and in trying to understand the relationship between Islam, compassion and being non-judgmental.

Advocacy and Lobbying

We lobby all the relevant structures both in government and in civil society, particularly our own religious leadership, for greater support for people living with HIV/AIDS and a deeper awareness of the need for openness and empathy.  While our own work is primarily among Muslims, we are committed to working with all other progressive groups working with HIV/AIDS
